My first attempt at poetry in a blog

The time has finally come to write my own poetry. After weeks of trying to deflect this inevitable blog post by writing about poetry in general, I have officially run out of ideas for blog posts.

Soooo.....this is my attempt at a Limerick:

Staying at home, not much to do
Might as well, write poetry too
I don't know what to say
Just have to pass this day
BS'ing this blog, ya know it's true.

However, this endeavor was not as bad as I thought. Sure the poem I wrote was only 5 lines long, but I think that it went pretty well. I had to look up the conventions of Limericks, which were also relatively simple. A limerick usually has a rhyme scheme of aabba, with the first, second, and fifth lines similar in length: about 7 to 10 syllables each. The third and fourth lines of a limerick contain anywhere from 5 to 7 syllables. Before this, I really didn't know what a limerick was. Like, I had a general idea that it had something to do with St. Patrick's day, but nothing more. It's rather a strange form of poetry, as it is supposed to be humorous in an absurdist way. Some famous poets that wrote in this form include Edward Lear and Gershon Legman. A lot of the poems in this form start off with the "There was a/an [adjective] person/man/woman from [place]" and digresses into a description about that subject while keeping a lighter tone. Of course, not all limericks start off like this, which is why I didn't include it in my poem.

Overall, I had a lot more fun with this than I expected, not only with creating a limerick but also with learning a little but more about its history and background.
