Is Satire Truly Offensive?

        Widely used throughout the literary world, satire exists to shed light on various political issues to societal ones. These issues are often extraordinarily controversial and require extreme caution to write about, as it can easily lead to a massive backlash. At its core, satire has a central message that the author wants to convey to the audience, usually at the opposing argument’s expense.

Example of a Political Cartoon that uses Satire

If one looks at a satirical piece without any more profound thought, one could think that it could be offensive. A prime example of this is South Park, a dark humor TV series that utilizes many jokes on the edge of offensiveness. This series follows a group of friends who are starkly different from each other. If only looked on the surface level, a viewer would be significantly taken aback at the types of seemingly insensitive jokes thrown around. It might offend them originally. However, when they look at it closely, there is a clear message behind these jokes. These hyperbolical jokes represent the amount of remnant racism that is still present in American society. The personality of some of the characters, especially Eric Cartman^, represents an over-the-top version of the racists’ typical mindset today. Such polarizing characters are present to bring even more attention to the issue, allowing the audience to be more likely to notice more subtle versions of these characters present in real life. When looking at this satirical tv show from this perspective, it can initially come across as insensitive, but it has a clear purpose to inform rather than offend.
